Health Examinations

Health standards for seafarers

Decision of appropriate health standards for seafarers is based on the international conventions and guidelines established by the ILO (International Labour Organisation). You can read more about the guidelines here.

Digital certificate of health examination for seafarers

In Sweden, the standard for a medical examination of a seafarer is stated by the Swedish Transport Agency (Transportstyrelsen).

In Sweden, every physician with a doctor’s license is allowed to issue a medical certificate for on board duty of a seafarer.

In 2009, the Agency issued a digital version of the medical certificate for seafarers. Filling out the certificate on-line, doctors are immediately informed on the actual health demands for the applied service. To be able to use the system, the doctor must fulfill an interactive education on the internet about working conditions on board ships.

The International Maritime Health Association (IMHA) has launched an accreditation programme open to any clinic or medical practitioner providing medical fitness examinations for seafarers. Learn more on: www.imhaquality.net.
